December 29, 2013 Is the Third Anniversary of Old North Davis Chat (228)

The first Old North Chat blog post was published three years ago today, on December 29, 2010. This was (and is) it:

Curiously, there were two additional small posts that same day. They are reproduced after the jump.

Three Faces In the Landscape (227)

In strolling about Old North I have come onto three faces inscribed in the landscape. Close cropped pictures of them are seen here.

Where are they? Wider shots of their respective locations are given after the jump.

New Life At a Vacant House (226)

Almost a year ago a small Old North house became vacant and went up for sale for what seemed a long time. The “for sale” sign finally came down a short while ago although the house showed little sign of life.

But that has now changed. A modest string of holiday lights frames the roof and front window and a lighted tree shines through that window.

It may be modest, but it is nonetheless powerfully cheerful.

Downtown Parking Planners Propose Ending Free On-Street Parking in Old North (225)

Downtown parking is in the news because the “Downtown Parking Task Force” (“Task Force”) (image 1) presented a 256 page report to the Davis City Council this last Tuesday (image 2).

Numbers 2 and 3 of that group’s 19 recommendations caught my attention because they focus on getting downtown employees to park farther from the “core of the core” by motivating them to park in Old North (among other places).

The odd thing about this effort is that the Task Force proposes to stimulate this by starting to charge employees $8 a month for what is now free!

I guess it is only in quirky Davis that something free is made more attractive by charging $8 a month for it.

Turkey Trot Masses Once Again Plod on 6th, E, and 5th Streets (223)

Repeating what is becoming a habit, the “A Change of Pace Foundation” will once again
flood our streets with plodding racers--this time on Saturday, November 23rd.

Readers of ONChat will recall I reported on this event last year under the title “Plodding Masses on E Street, Saturday, Nov. 17,” which is here:

Looking at the pictures from last year, I see that it was raining.

Death of a Raccoon at 5th & E (221)

I was going by the northeast corner of 5th and E streets about 4pm yesterday and noticed the body of an apparently dead fair-sized mammal with its head in the street drain and body in the gutter.

I stopped, took a picture  (image 1), called the Davis Police and Yolo Animal Control, and went about other matters.

At dusk that same day, I took the photos from my camera and noticed two things.

A Spate of Home Improvements Along 7th Street (220)

There seems to be a spate of home improvements along 7th Street.

Of the seven on or close to that street, five form a continuous (albeit L-shaped) line.

Couple With Children 2 Years Old & 3 Months Old Ask: Is the Old North A Good Place For a Family To Live? (219)

In my role as the Old North Davis Chat blogger, I have received an email from a couple I do not know who have two children (2 years old and 3 months old) asking me if the Old North is “a good place for a family to live”?

My response to them was: Let’s find out how people answer this question by posting it on the Old North Davis Chat blog and on Old North NextDoor.

So, with the permission of the email writer, Audrey Hall, I reproduce what she explains about her family's situation and the question she asks.

I urge anyone who desires to respond to email  Audrey  at:

City Installs “NO DUMPING” Sign at Trash Corner (218)

Wednesday, September 18, a City crew installed a tasteful sign declaring--in all caps--“NO DUMPING” at our infamous 7th and C trash corner. Images 1 and 2 show it. (The red and white paintings on the ground are, I am told, markers telling the crew where to dig or not to dig for the sign.)

On page B5 of the July 24th Enterprise there is the following “Notice Inviting Bids” for “Fifth Street Corridor Improvements:”
